For an assignment we were asked to choose which architype, from the ’12 brand architypes’, defines ourselves. I’m the sage, the truth seeker.
(All architypes on https://www.thehartford.com/business-playbook/in-depth/choosing-brand-archetype)
Definition of the sage:
Goal: To help the world gain wisdom and insight
Traits: Knowledgeable, trusted source of information, wisdom and intelligence, thoughtful, analytical, mentor, guru, advisor
Drawback: Could be overly contemplative or too opinionated
Marketing niche: Help people to better understand the world, provide practical information and analysis
Anecdote prove
I’m a philanthropist: I enjoy helping, informing, giving to and supporting people. I use language to level up my contacts. Giving insights at someone gives me pleasure. The big downside would be that I go too far into discussions.
Currently I’m working in a bar. I’m doing weekends, sometimes late at night. There are some bars where workers from the catering business meet.
When sitting at a counter, with a beer in front of you, discussions arise.
Once I was talking to an elderly man. I started talking about how young entrepreneurs are informing all expenses and income to the tax regulation, instead of keeping some undeclared to avoid taxes. I started arguing about the cost for government, the support for pension savings, better understanding of the market,… And then the man got mad. I was not sure why, but he did not appreciate my arguments.
While believing in a better most honest world, and while trying to convince others to think likewise, this man was countering me.
Later I heard from the bar lady why he just could not hear my opinion. Apparently he used to have his own restaurant and was caught by tax regulation for undeclared income. He was fined hard and went bankrupt, with a big debt and poverty as result.
This anecdote was given on the sage description tags: to help gain insights, trusted source of information and help people to understand the world, and also about being too opiniated. If I had been more contemplative I would have held back my parole.
Company identifying
If I had to choose one company on which I can identify myself, it would be Google. I’m not a big fan of big companies, but Google has my vote.
I repost and comment the above information of what the sage is:
Goal: To help the world gain wisdom and insight
Traits: Knowledgeable, trusted source of information, wisdom and intelligence, thoughtful, analytical, mentor, guru, advisor:
I guess it is clear the Google search engine is defined as the above: giving wisdom and insights and being a trusted source of information.
Mentor, guru and advisor are also in place. The previous years Google has started to educate in subjects like digital marketing and others. They are educating people about the digital Google world, but also leading the mass to be digitally more present and in use.
Drawback: Could be overly contemplative or too opinionated:
Well, being overly contemplative, it just can’t be pointed otherwise. Google is mining people and company information. Without good regulations, Google will not hold back. And there is the American, too opinionated issue that Google would be in favor of democrats and is giving their search objects better results.
Being overly contemplative and too opinionated is something that is still in investigation. But it is to be assumed these gossips will hold some truth.
Marketing niche: Help people to better understand the world, provide practical information and analysis:
The best Google example is ‘Google Analytics’. Google Analytics helps to understand the traffic on and to websites. With graphs and tags you can explore the online search world or what visitors find interesting on your website.

Overall
Although I’ve enough common points with the sage, there are other characteristics that define my person. Let’s call myself a mix between the sage, the innocent and the regular guy. Or ‘the regular, innocent sage’.
Hi Michiel, Interesting article about Google Analytics. Keep on the good work!
