Foundation
In my opinion social media has made classic marketing more important.
While many are sure that social media is the new foundation on which marketing will be based, I see only a big (side) role coming up. It’s just a new medium that classical marketing will be able to use.
Social media is not everything
The base on which marketers use social media is written practically the same as standard marketing. A difference lies in how to reach users of the network and applying to which styles these social media are carrying.

Still marketers need to consider that social networks are limited in reach. E.g. Facebook, the largest social network on the planet, has become outdated for the youth. They think Facebook is for their parents.
Classic Marketing is still hip
From the moment you realize what marketing is all about, you will understand that social media are only a part of the marketing concept.

From R&D to aftersales, and everything in between, is in contact or is developed by marketing. Marketing is not just ‘putting a product in the market’. Research, creativity and creation are used to underline each statement a company, brand or product is meant to carry.
Social media role
Social media is a communication method for marketing. Communication is a part of the P from Promotion. And the 4 P’s are the final stage in the creation of a product or brand.
Simply said, social media is an upcoming marketing tool, but is not the only tool.
Briefly said
Companies using social media, are a derivation of general classic marketing. Social media is a (big) part of classical marketing.
Don’t forget that social media has a big reach, but not all reach.
And social media is mostly used for communication, and communication is only inside 1 of the 4 P’s.

There is a good blog about communication between social media and classic marketing on : https://themissingball.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/classic-marketing-vs-social-media-marketing/
–> “In the traditional setting the information is spread by a company (active) while audiences just listen (passive). In the social media approach is more a bidirectional dialog.”

I totally agree with the fact that you reach a lot of people with social media but not everyone!
